USA Sports Council President Alfredo La Mont Responds to IOC Decision

December 6, 2017

"The decision on Russian doping by the IOC satisfies some, leaves others asking for blood and also makes some feel it could and should have been stronger. As it stands, "Olympic Athlete from Russia"(OAR) still contains the word “Russia”.

"The consequences suffered by those responsible at the top are largely inconsequential..."

The consequences suffered by those responsible at the top are largely inconsequential when compared with the very grave dangers whistleblowers like Rodchenkov -- with his family suffering in Russia or the Stepanovs who are in permanent exile -- must endure. So we now have a situation where Mutko can’t go to the Olympics anymore and Zhukov will have to miss #Pyeongchang. No more, no less.

At the end of the day, after the IOC’s historic decision on Russian doping, there appear to be a set of consequences for all athletes, both clean and dirty: those who were denied success and recognition at the Olympic Games, and those who knowingly cheated and are now banned forever. Regardless, we cannot forget that there is still another shoe waiting to drop: harassment and sexual and physical abuse of athletes."
